Galvinisation

Palisade fencing requires little to no maintenance besides a coat of paint every few years.
Because your palisade fence is made of steel it is prone to rust, especially in coastal areas. Galvanisation is the method by which this process is slowed down. Galvinastion involves coating the steel with a protective layer of zinc.

This can be achieved in two ways:

Electrodeposition

As implied by it's title, electrical current is used to encourage the formation of a metal plating. In the case of fencing it is usually zinc.

Hot-dip galvanisation

The process of hot-dip galvanisation is more commonly used when galvanising palisade fencing as it ensures that the entire piece of steel is coated.

The steel is prepared for the hot zinc dip through a number of chemical processes through which the steel is clean and made more conducive to being coated with the zinc.

Lead is often added to the zinc which helps fluidity of the bath, or molten zinc into which the steel is dipped.

Hot dip galvanised steel has a characteristic crystal pattern, very much like that of a steel dustbin or a lamp pole.

Additional ways of slowing the appearance of rust is to powder coat or paint the fence, usually in a colour suited to it's environment.
